The Longevity Secret of Loma Linda
How can learning from Adventism help us Live up to 10 Years Longer?
Once you start any research about longevity, pretty soon you will come across Loma Linda. If you have not heard about this small American town on the outskirts of Los Angeles, now it is time to learn about it. Loma Linda has been subject of much focus over the past decades. But why? It has been discovered that people there live up to 10 years longer than the American average. Just imagine that you can live up to 10 years longer and what you could achieve in that time? But what do people in this town do differently to everyone else?
Most of the people in Loma Linda have one thing in common. They are Adventists of the Seventh Day. The Adventist church not only provides them spiritual guidance, but also advices on nutrition and encourages healthy lifestyle. There is a lot we can all take from the Adventist approach to life to increase our longevity. We all know that diet is the key to longevity so let’s start with the diet.

The Diet
Adventists believe that you should treat your body like a temple. Honor it, respect it and not abuse it. They achieve this by avoiding stimulants such as alcohol or cigarettes and pursuing vegetarian diet. And vegetarian diet does not only mean avoiding meat. Often when you focus on what you eat, you make daily conscious decisions on how to reduce processed food and incorporate more nuts and grains your the daily life. For this reason a vegetarian diet might impact what you eat more than you think. If you want to know about how adventist diet reduces risk of mortality, check this study out. (1)
Fitness, Weight Management and Prevention
Adventists believe in temperance. They encourage this moderation in both food intake as well as in resources utilization. In addition to that the church provides opportunity for people to exercise into old age. A combination of weight management and exercise lowers risk of many illnesses such as heart attack, diabetes or stroke. These are without doubt the most typical illnesses reducing lifespan in the Western World.
Additionally rather than treating illnesses once they occur, for Adventists everting starts with health prevention. They organize regular free health seminars and screenings in the local churches. In addition to that church also offers courses on nutrition and healthy cooking.
Religion and its Impact on Longevity
Religion might not be an answer for everyone. Nevertheless it provides some people with a reassurance, peace, rest and sense of purpose. If you adopt an optimistic outlook and an acceptance that some things are out of your hands, life becomes less stressful. By being a part of a community connected to religion you are more likely to participate in volunteering even after retiring. Naturally this builds a sense of community and reduces loneliness.
Time for Rest
Let’s prioritize our downtime on a regular basis just like Adventists do. They do it in the form of Sabbath when they make time for family, friends and rest. We should also find a regular time in our daily lives to meet people we love and spend time together.
